"Voted Best Hatian Band"- Miami New Times
Papaloko The King of Vodou Pop
Papaloko & Loray Mistik play Vodou music known as “Vodou pop,” an exciting fusion of traditional Haitian instruments and rhythms combined with West African and Latin rhythms, Caribbean sounds, rock and roll, blues and hip-hop. Founded by multitalented artist and bandleader Jude “Papaloko” Thegenus, Loray Mistik, the “Mystic Thunder,” has delighted generations of Miami audiences and filled dancefloors around the world for more than three decades.
Loray Mistik performs true Vodou music in a modern pan-global setting, engaging audiences with a fresh interpretation of a living tradition. Unlike the staged folklore performances that ignore modern innovations. Loray Mistik’s unique style of “Vodou pop” updates powerful ancient traditions that speak to the heart of Haitian people while sharing a universal message of joyful celebration, social conscience and spiritual strength. During its high-energy performances, the group presents ritual dances, prayers, and other religious arts that educate the audience about Haitian culture in addition to entertaining them. It also typifies the music of the Lwa (the Spirits or Orishas) of Africa, with many songs incorporating prayers to the 101 Vodou Nations that look over mankind and protect believers and non-believers alike.
